Depicted here, the Canadian Rocky mountains under the wing of a Virgin Atlantic 747, carrying me to California where I am now based until December, in the vast Mountain View Googleplex. Been here a week now, and its slightly distressing how quickly I have adjusted to the California way of life. Already I am driving into work everyday to an air conditioned office, and have almost stopped drinking entirely. While the Google food in Dublin is really excellent, the cafes here put it to shame.

On a slightly more serious note, this is all a bit sudden isn’t it? Is this some kind of accelerated training thing?

The food could not be less American. I am unable to identify most of the dishes available as its mostly things I have never eaten before. Everything is cooked right there from fresh ingredients, and the nutritionist oversees everything to ensure its all good. I can’t remember having even seen a hamburger. Having said there is the well understood concept of the “Google 15″, being the average weight gain in pounds of all new employees. In Dublin that was usually attributed to the increased beer intake. Here it is put down to the awesome food.
Coming to MV for training is standard for all engineers. I get away with a few weeks. Other departments have to come over for up to 3 months. There is a structured element to the training, but as I see it a strong part of the value is getting a chance to meet properlly with the people we all work with on a daily basis.
